It is paramount that EU continues to support fundamental, investigator-driven research. Groundbreaking fundamental research, open-minded curiosity and cooperation that transcends boundaries are the requirements for scientific development and addressing global challenges. Supporting and developing such research on a broad enough basis is also necessary to have the capacity of taking advance of new findings made elsewhere. Thus broad variety of fundamental research is paramount even for small economies.
