Through education, universities contribute to the green transition and wider societal impact, empowering learners of all ages with knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to meet global and societal challenges. Accordingly, scientific literacy is a fundamental asset for resolving the grand challenges in resilience and for combating mis- and disinformation. The University of Helsinki engages in academic outreach activities to bring research into the public domain and promotes scientific thinking and skills through all educational stages, and beyond. The University will gladly continue to develop these activities in cooperation with other experts in the field. There is some international cooperation already in place, e.g. in EU projects, but they do not achieve sufficient long-term sustainability, and the research, activities, materials that have been achieved do not necessarily spread to society. There is a pressing need for EU policies that actively promote capacity building (e.g. technical and digital capacitation for Big Data management) at all levels of the society. The goal should be that citizens have the basic understanding on the critical challenges for sustainability and healthy planet, the means to reach the sustainability goals and the consequences if such actions are not taken.
