As preconditions for high quality research, research infrastructures (RIs) of a high standard are of fundamental importance. However, the long-term sustainability and development of RIs are a challenge as they demand long-term investments and resources for maintenance, renewal and decommissioning. While the development of European RI via ESFRI continue to be important, the investments have almost exclusively been dominated by the establishment of new RIs. In the future, the development and EU level investments should focus also on infrastructures that can be below the ESFRI level (e.g. RIs of national importance). Such RIs remain crucial for supporting the dynamics of research and enhancing the outreach of universities and unexploited benefits are arising from their large-scale interconnection and networking. Sustainability of RI should also be considered by sustainable funding, covering the whole life cycle of RI.
