One of the core values of European science and it must be maintained.
It is important to underline this value because academic freedom is not self-evident worldwide.
As we do not know what the future looks like, we need the best talent to work for it – and the talents need to be given the freedom to identify the topics to be studied. If research topics were chosen for purely political reasons, they may be too short-sighted, and interest may be too short-time to reach results.
