The proposed ERA action is a prerequisite for high quality research and researcher training. Further integration and strengthening of the European RI landscape requires continuous activities and should be given a high priority. We should recognize the EU research infrastructures as a strategic asset that requires sustainable funding models and scalability according to the needs of research and society. Finnish universities have made extensive strategic investments in the development of research infrastructures and in promoting the use and access of European research infrastructures. The University of Oulu is involved in 11 infrastructure networks accepted to the national research infrastructures roadmap 2021-2024 by the Research Council of Finland. The university is responsible for the national coordination of three of these networks and three infrastructure networks on the ESFRI roadmap (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures). At the EU level, strengthening research infrastructures is an important part of the ERA and an opportunity to strengthen the integration of Finnish researchers and infrastructures in all scientific fields into the European operating environment. The EU is updating the entire research infrastructure landscape, responding to the current challenges, developing monitoring, improving the accessibility and use of infrastructures, and increasing new funding opportunities. It should be emphasized that research infrastructure policy should continue to consider the different infrastructure needs and nature of different scientific fields.
